My Griffe Mill write up for PPS.

Griffe Mill Investigation 25/5/13

Si got the suggestion to investigate Griffe mill in November 2012, but due to the outside location of the ruined building, we had to wait for better weather. It was a stab in the dark as to which weekend would prove to be dry enough but luckily our first choice proved to be a lovely sunny day. The team met up at the top of a valley in Stanbury and started on the downhill journey through sheep filled fields in the general direction of our chosen location. There had been a sighting of a young girl by our 'contact' and he had done some research himself but wanted us to see what else could be discovered. Information on the mill was thin on the ground , but interestingly a story did surface which surrounded the death of a girl of 11/12 called Susannah Arabella Shackleton who had drowned in the mill pond. Our 'contact' thought that this was probably the girl he had seen. Si and I kept this information from the team.
Si, Sue, Kevin, myself and Matt Boddy (a sensitive) made our way to the bottom where the fields were split by a waterway and we got our first glimpse of the half still standing mill. After initial photos were taken and we decided where best to start our investigation, we set up and did protection. Interestingly Matt had said to Sue that he felt 'a blow to the head' was sensed. Kevin described an image of a whooshing blonde  woman in an apron moving through into another room.
As we set up, one of our K2 meters lit up full briefly.
We start with the ouija board and an old victorian glass Si recently bought. Time  passed  and the glass didn't move. After a while of trying for glass movement and an EVP session, we tried something which lent itself to a more mental spiritual connection. We stood in a circle with our eyes shut and held hands. This visualising exercise leans into a sort of forced group mediumship and if nothing else, gets us to focus as one unit. Its important that we have the confidence to speak out the random images or ideas that spring to our minds. So we try imagine what this place would have been like when it was a fully functioning cotton mill which made silk handkerchiefs. The old water wheel which powered the leather drive belt probably caused quite a lot of noise pollution and its known 172 workers would have made for a bustling place.
Si said for some reason, what came to him was firstly the words 'Poor Horse' and soon after a few swear words. Si has a mental image of a man talking to another man saying 'Get the fuck off wi' yer' as if one of the men is meant to be elsewhere. Kevin feels himself swaying and by the end says his left eye is a bit teary. But it must be noted that Kevin has had a hard day for hours with an early start to the day, so this could all fall under tiredness.

We return to the ouija board with a clean mental state and I ask gently for some reaction with the glass, this time we use our usual glass. We see a small movement as the glass shuffles to S.
Ever so slowly the next letter is R.
Chris "Are you going to talk to us?" YES
"Are you male?" NO
"Using the numbers, how old are you?" (Si has a number pop into his head and he writes it in the notes book in front of the camcorder) The glass writes 12. Si shows us that he has written 12.
"Can you spell out your first name?" S........R. The glass halts as we try to get more information.
We ask questions and try different ways to get the glass to move in a useful way but its painfully slow with this spirit controlling the board and we cant strike up a decent communication.
I ask Si if we should try and change spirits since this has proven to occur before. Sometimes a child or just a weak spirit is up first to test the water with us or in fact, for other spirits to hide behind.
Si asks me to persevere with this young girl.
I change tact and ask for the equipment to be affected instead if thats an option and it happened when we were setting up.
Matt senses that theres a guy around with a 'Bullish/cocky' attitude. This is what we have seen before as i said. Due to the low energy on the board, we agree that Si should take a more direct approach. The intention is to evoke an emotional response and therefore energise the spirits. Si talks of the story of the murdered girl Susannah and her possible murder.
We have to remember that we are leading the board to a degree but have to use our experience and common sense to work out what information is genuine.
Si "Was a girl murdered around here?" YES
"Am I speaking to that girl?" YES
"Was it a family member?" (Apparently, Susannah was on the way to meet her father who worked here, when she last arrived at the mill.) NO.
"Give us one word which would let us know how you were killed" An undecipherable answer is made, but Si and myself expect drowning to come up if reports are correct.
Matt senses a 'sexual assault' occurred.
Si, still taking a direct approach asks "Was your surname Shackleton?"   No response.
We try putting a marble in the glass since we are trying to commune with a child. The glass makes its most speedy movement but doesn't keep it up.
Chris "What was your middle name?" (I'm expecting S.A.S. but) the glass writes R.....S again.
I wonder if the culprit is still about and watching us and the girl spirit.
Si "Is the man who did this still here?"
"How many other girls did he do this too?"R.......S  (?)
(Matt later tells me that he feels that it wasn't only girls who suffered here).
The slow process must be very frustrating for her as well as us.
With the birds still harmoniously tweeting in the background and the sun starting to fall making the shadows thin out and stretch over the fields, the temperature drops as we ask other spirits to come forward.
Si takes Matt's place as he battles his hay fever.
The glass moves to T.
Si asks for movement now. S-I-G-N.
"What sign?"
F-R-E-E
"Free to what?"
T-O  S-H-A-G.
Si wonders if this means that the 'gaffer' was free to have sex with his workers using the threat of sacking them.
Sue "Did you murder her?"  YES
"How?" H-I-T
"With what?" H-A-M-M-E-R .  This is spelt out with a fierce glass movement.
"Did you bury her?" YES
"Who had she come to see?" F-A-T-H-E-R
Matt had said that he felt a blow to the head earlier.
"Can you spell her first name?" F-U-C-K-E-D  H-E-R
Sue says "Your a nasty man! I hope you're in Hell!" NO
Matt senses the spirit doesn't care what anyone thinks.
"Did you bury her?" J-A-C-K
"Is Jack your name?" NO
Chris "Is that who disposed of her body?"  YES
"What was the name of her father?"   The glass moves slowly over a letter and then over the next one on and on and on, round the letter circle, clearly winding us up.
Matt feels that the spirit is somewhat afraid of him. When asked the board spells YES.
Matt "He doesn't like what I am"
Chris "What is he?" W-I-T-C-H.
Matt "No I'm not"
Sue "Did you kill others?" YES
Si "How do we address you please?"   Nothing.
Sue "Were you rich?" NO
Sue "Did you own the mill?" NO
Chris "What is your name please?....Come on tell us" I go around the board and introduce us all, this has been known to bear results in the past.
"Just tell us your first or last name" S-U-C-K  M-Y  C-O-C-K   (charming!)
Sue "He's a nasty man"
Matt "He had to take it because no one would give it to him!.
Chris "Look we're not here to victimise you, we come with respect but you must know what you did was wrong!" NO
"Ok well others think it was wrong" P-O-W...
Sue "Power! It's all about power"
Matt "Power is nothing without respect"
We are all getting very cold and I start to find it difficult to even write the notes.
Kevin "If they didn't do what he asked , they'd lose their jobs!"
We ask for his name again and again.
Si "Did you get found out?" YES
Si "What did the law do? Was it the law?"
Matt says that on the day we invited him on this investigation, he felt a hanging sensation s connected.
Si "Did they lynch you?'
Sue "So you were hung?" YES
Kevin "By the workers?" YES
Si "Was it made to look like an accident?'

2 loud bangs are heard by us but I've no idea what they were.
Si "Where did they hang you from? What did they hang you with?" S-I-L-K. (that would make sense since that would have been very much to hand)
Sue "So they hung you with silk?" A-D-A  G-O-O-D   T-I-M-E (Was this, 'had a good time'? Is he being cocky again?)   Then G-I-R-L-S.
Si "What's your name please?" H-A.......we think he's laughing at us but Matt says "Is your name what just popped into my head?"  YES    The glass moves round and round in a circle around YES
Matt thought  HAROLD.
Sue "last name?" L-I-S-T-E-R
Sue "How old were you when you died?" 44
We are really freezing now and in danger of being frozen stiff on the spot all crouching around  a ouija board......that would not look good when we were discovered.
Kevin gets the answer that Harold's body is buried 5 miles from this mill.
We thank the spirits for talking to us and close the board down and take protection off.

It's taken us two and a half years to get proper obscenities thrown at us through the board and that's a good sign in my eyes. I think that Hollywood would influence people who are doing the ouija board for a laugh to  have such 'threatening' language come out every time and this separates the people who fool themselves with the board from real investigators.
With so little facts to back our evidence up, I guess we just the information gained to be correct.
Whatever happened down here it's a tranquil area filled with a peaceful charm.
But if the nights cold doesn't kill you, the walk back up the valley to the road will.
